Legal knowledge,
engineered to scale.

Australian law firms are being asked to do more, prove more, and charge less. All at once. Legal Engineering turns your firm’s expertise into auditable, AI-enabled systems that carry the load, without surrendering the judgment that makes law, law.

Two ways to work with us

Same discipline. Two very different doors.

01

On the matter. Briefed like counsel.

Retained on a single matter, priced per stage, quoted before the stage begins. We carry the engineering load (evidence, discovery, pleadings, trial prep) working directly with you while every judgment call stays yours. When the stage ends, so does the fee.

02

On the firm. Built with you.

We come into the practice and build the systems your business runs on, with your lawyers, for your staff. A diagnostic first, then one workflow at a time, then the capability to govern it yourselves. Fixed scope, no big bang.

Some firms only ever need one door. Most matters tell you which.

The moment

Australia already knows what bad automation costs.

Robodebt was automation of legal decisions with the law taken out of the loop: no interpretation, no accountable human, no audit trail anyone could defend. It ended in a Royal Commission and hundreds of thousands of unlawful decisions.

The lesson was never don’t automate. It was never automate legal judgment without the law, the human, and the audit trail built in. That is precisely the discipline this service is built on.

Legal Engineering doesn’t collapse law into code. It builds an interface where legal reasoning and computation inform one another, and every determination can be surfaced, questioned and defended.

Why now

The pressures are arriving together.

None of these is new on its own. What’s new is that they’re converging on the same firms, in the same year.

01

The billable hour is eating your best people

Senior associates burn out running document review, due diligence and conflicts checks that a well-built system does in minutes. Clients resent paying for it. You resent writing it off. Everyone loses the same hours twice.

02

The record has outgrown the human

Disputes now turn on contemporaneous digital records: tens of thousands of messages, emails and transactions no team can read at litigation pace. Sampling misses the document that decides the case; reading it all burns the budget. Volume itself has become the adversary.

03

Fixed-fee pressure from below and above

Alternative legal service providers and the Big Four are commoditising the work that used to fund your leverage model. Clients want scope certainty, not a timesheet. Margin lives in the work you can systematise, or leaks out of the work you can’t.

04

AI anxiety is now a conduct risk

Australian courts have already sanctioned practitioners for filing AI-fabricated citations. The Supreme Courts of NSW and Victoria have issued practice notes and guidance on generative AI. “Just use ChatGPT” is now a professional-conduct and PI exposure, not a shortcut.

The discipline

What legal engineering actually is.

A discipline that marries legal expertise and AI to turn compliance and legal workflows into scalable, inspectable systems. Your lawyers’ judgment becomes the specification; the system executes the first pass and shows its working; a human owns the call. Four moves:

I

Decompose

We break a legal or compliance workflow into units of analysis small enough to be reasoned about reliably, each with a clear question, inputs, and a defensible answer. This is the engineering half: your lawyers’ knowledge, made explicit.

II

Build

Each unit becomes a grounded, domain-specific AI step: no free-text guessing, no public model trained on your files. The steps are orchestrated into a coherent workflow that produces a first-pass analysis and shows its working.

III

Validate

Your admitted lawyers test the system against known matters and their own judgment. Nothing goes live until the people accountable for the advice trust the output and can explain it.

IV

Supervise

Routine determinations run automatically; the subtle, novel or high-stakes ones are routed to a human. Every determination is logged with its rationale: an audit trail that exceeds ordinary recordkeeping.

Whether we're briefed on a matter or building inside your firm, these four moves and the non-negotiables behind them never change.

Path 01 · On the matter

Briefed like counsel.

Retained on a matter. Priced per stage. Quoted before the stage begins.

You already work this way with counsel, briefed at the moments that matter, against a fee estimate you can disclose to your client. Legal engineering runs on the same model: a fixed brief fee to stand the matter system up, fixed stage fees for the work below, and hourly only for the genuinely ad-hoc. Your client sees the cost up front, in the costs agreement, like any other cost of the matter.

Some matters won't need us. The complex ones will, usually right when the timetable starts to bite. We work directly with you or your counsel, on your matter, to your rules: every output a working draft for you to settle, every judgment call yours.

Where we carry the load.

Five stages where engineering pays fastest, because they're high-volume, high-stakes, and running today on memory, diligence, and hope.

Every stage carries a fixed fee and a defined deliverable, from a $2,500 pleadings map to full trial preparation, with hearing support by the day.

“The firms that win the next decade won’t be the ones that resisted AI, or the ones that trusted it blindly. They’ll be the ones that engineered it, and could prove it.”

Path 02 · On the firm

Built with you, run by you.

Matters end. The friction that made them expensive doesn't. The second way in is working on the business itself, building the systems your lawyers and staff run every day, so the next matter starts from a better place.

Three fixed-scope engagements, in the order that de-risks them:

01

Legal Engineering Diagnostic

A fixed-scope assessment of where systematisation pays. We map your highest-friction, highest-volume workflows, score them for automatability and risk, and hand you a prioritised roadmap, not a sales pitch.

  • Workflow friction map
  • Automatability & risk scoring
  • Prioritised build roadmap
  • Governance & conduct-fit review
02

Workflow Build

We design, build and validate one auditable workflow end-to-end (matter intake, conflicts screening, document review, precedent management, compliance workflows) with your lawyers in the loop and an audit trail baked in from day one. One workflow, proven, before the next. Never a big bang.

  • Decomposed workflow spec
  • Grounded AI system, Australian-hosted
  • Validation against real case data
  • Supervision & audit framework
03

Capability Uplift

A retained engagement that turns your firm into the builder. We train your lawyers and compliance team to supervise, extend and govern legal-engineering systems, and stand up the governance frameworks that keep you defensible.

  • Supervisor training
  • AI governance & policy framework
  • Conduct-rule alignment
  • Ongoing advisory retainer
Straight answers

The questions partners actually ask.

Do you provide legal services?

No. We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice. We engineer the workflows your lawyers design: systems an admitted lawyer supervises, validates and remains accountable for. Every engagement is structured so that legal judgment stays with the legal practitioner, and the audit trail proves it.

Matter or firm: which do we start with?

Whichever is bleeding. If a live matter is drowning you in evidence or a timetable, brief us on the matter. You'll see the discipline working under real pressure. If the friction is structural (the same hours lost on every file) start with the Diagnostic. Matter clients often become firm clients; the systems we build on a brief show the firm what's possible.

Will this replace our lawyers?

No. It moves them up the value ladder. The system clears the repetitive first pass; your lawyers spend their hours on judgment, strategy, negotiation and client trust: the work that actually needs them, and the work clients are happy to pay for.

Is this compliant with our conduct obligations?

Auditability and human oversight are the whole point. Every determination is surfaced with its rationale, and an admitted lawyer validates and conveys any advice. The approach is built to sit inside the NSW and Victorian courts’ AI guidance and your Solicitors’ Conduct Rules, not around them.

Our client data is confidential and privileged.

Systems are designed for data sovereignty: Australian-hosted, with no client data used to train third-party models. Confidentiality and privilege are engineering requirements from the first design decision, not an afterthought.

We’re a law firm, not a technology company.

That is exactly the point. You bring the law; I bring the engineering. You don’t need programmers on staff. The method is built so that legal knowledge, not code, is the scarce input.

How is this different from just buying a legal-tech product?

Off-the-shelf tools encode someone else’s judgment and someone else’s risk appetite. Legal engineering encodes yours, your interpretations, your matter types, your thresholds, in a system you can inspect, audit and defend.

Two doors. One conversation.

Running a matter that's outgrowing the team? Or a firm losing the same hours on every file? Either way, it starts with one honest conversation about where engineering earns its place.
